What is an Ankle Arthroscopy?
Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed when further evaluation of an ankle injury is needed.
This procedure implements the use of fiber optics to allow the surgeon to see the ankle through visual monitors. Small incisions are made in the foot, and instruments are inserted.
This procedure may be necessary if you are suffering from debris in your ankle from a previous injury. It’s proved to be beneficial for patients suffering from ankle fractures and infection, as well.
During arthroscopy, your surgeon will examine the extent of the damage and make any necessary repairs.
The Ankle Arthroscopy Procedure
This procedure is typically done as an outpatient surgery. At the start of the procedure, you will be prepped and administered anesthesia, perhaps by an IV line.
Your foot, ankle, and a portion of your leg will be exposed. At times, devices are used to expand the space of the ankle, and fluid will be injected.
Once your foot and ankle have been positioned correctly, small incisions are made. These small incisions allow the camera and any portals or instruments to be inserted into the ankle.
The positions of these incisions are critical, as they’re made to avoid any essential nerves and avoid damaging vessels. The incisions are either made in the front or back of the foot. Sometimes, incisions are made in both for a complete view.
Once the procedure has been completed, all instruments are removed, and small sutures are placed to stitch up the incisions.
What to Expect After Surgery
Once the procedure is completed, you’ll be taken to another room to wake up and recover from the anesthesia. Once you’ve properly woken up, you’ll be given crutches to help bear your weight. Most patients will be allowed to go home on the same day of their surgery.
Your ankle will be bandaged to protect it and to reduce any swelling. If the surgery was more extensive, your doctor might place your foot in an immobilizer to further protect your ankle and promote healing.
On the other hand, if your arthroscopy was simply to make a diagnosis, you may only be given a splint to wear. Pain medicine will be prescribed to take after surgery.
Remember to keep your foot elevated and your bandages as dry as possible. Be sure to attend any follow-up appointments to see how your foot is healing.
What are the Benefits of Ankle Arthroscopy?
Ankle arthroscopy makes it possible for surgeons to have a clear visual of the ankle without creating large incisions in the foot. It lowers the risk of infection and decreases the amount of pain usually felt after ankle surgery.
Patients experience a significantly reduced recovery time and can return to their regular routines much faster.
