What Is A Stress Fracture?
Stress fractures can often go undiagnosed, as many people may just write it off as a sprain or pain in their foot. A stress fracture occurs when bones in your foot are suddenly involved in a new activity that causes stress. This can cause them to crack, resulting in a fracture.
If left untreated, a stress fracture can become a break. To prevent this, proper treatment must be sought out.
Stress Fracture Foot Treatment
Initial Treatment
If you think you have a stress fracture, the first thing you should do is apply the RICE method. RICE stands for rice, ice, compression, and elevation.
Rest: Avoid putting weight on the injured foot. It’s important to cease the activity that caused the stress fracture as well. If you do have to bear weight, make sure you are wearing a shoe that provides you with a lot of support.
Ice: Apply ice frequently to control the swelling in your foot. At various times during the day, apply a cold pack for 20 minutes at a time. Be sure to avoid applying the ice directly to your skin. Wrap the ice pack in a soft cloth or towel before application.
Compression: To prevent further swelling, wrap the injured foot in a light bandage.
Elevation: Try to elevate your foot raised higher than your heart as much as possible.
Medical Stress Fracture Foot Treatment
Once you see a doctor for your stress fracture, they will take an x-ray to determine the severity of the fracture. They may recommend that you use crutches to keep weight off of the fractured foot. You may even be prescribed protective footwear to reduce stress on your foot.
How Long Will The Foot Stress Fracture Take To Heal?
A foot stress fracture takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks to heal. If you are an active person, switch to activities that will place less stress on your foot.
Instead of running, take up swimming or cycling instead. If you begin to bear weight on the foot too early, you run the risk of worsening the fracture.
When you start exercising again, allow your body time to rest. You may choose to work out every other day to allow your foot to rest between activities.
During this period of recovery, wear comfortable and supportive footwear. Avoid wearing shoes with a raised heel that are stiff. Wear shoes that are specifically made for the activity you will be engaging in.
