We tend to associate melanoma — a form of skin cancer — with areas on our body that receive the most sun exposure, such as the face and arms.
While science has linked the development of melanoma to UV light exposure (such as from the sun or from tanning beds), it seems that other causes of this type of cancer exist, since it can develop in areas that are not frequently exposed to the sun, such as the bottom of the feet.
How can you be prepared to detect melanoma on your feet? What are the signs and symptoms of melanoma?
Symptoms of Foot Melanoma
Many of us are not in the habit of regularly examining our feet. However, a quick, daily inspection of your feet and toes can help you avoid suffering complications due to cancerous melanoma.
Melanoma often begins as a mole or a small growth on your skin featuring a different pigment. This can appear on the foot of your skin, toes, or even underneath your toenails.
According to Mayo Clinic, using an ABCDE system can help to identify melanoma:
- Asymmetrical shape – Normal moles usually grow in a circular shape, while moles or growths with melanoma often feature a half inconsistent with the other half.
- Border – Normal moles often have smooth borders, while moles with melanoma typically feature rugged, irregular borders.
- Color changes – Growths with melanoma often have a mix of many colors (brown, black, blue, red, pink, white, etc.).
- Diameter – Moles and growths larger than 0.25 inches may be cancerous.
- Evolving – Pay attention to any changes in the shape, size, color, or feeling in a mole or if itchiness or bleeding occurs.
Frequent checks of your feet and other hidden areas of your body with the above criteria in mind are recommended for patients of all ages since melanoma can develop at any time in life.
“Melanoma that occurs in the foot or ankle often goes unnoticed during its earliest stage, when it would be more easily treated. By the time melanoma of the foot or ankle is diagnosed, it frequently has progressed to an advanced stage, accounting for a higher mortality rate,” says the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Indeed, early diagnosis is crucial to fighting foot melanoma.
Diagnosing Foot Melanoma
If you notice any of the above signs and symptoms of melanoma beginning to develop, schedule a visit to your podiatrist as soon as possible.
By asking questions and performing a thorough examination of the spots on your feet, ankles, and toes, your podiatrist will be able to provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan.
Since melanoma is a serious form of cancer that can develop quickly, it is important to seek treatment immediately. Thankfully, melanoma is very treatable when caught in its early stages.
